Exmouth Fishing – July 2011

Dolphin fish can be a great feed when fresh and there has been a few about lately off the lighthouse waters. Young Thomas Rintoul, aged 6, caught the one pictured this week all by himself! Thomas is very lucky to have wonderful parents who can take him out on the boat fishing. He entered his fish pic in the monthly competition. We decided to match the winning prize this month for the fishing comp and make two prizes, one for the juniors and one for the adults. It is the biggest month yet and great to see such a variety of fish caught.

Queenfish have been aggressive around the islands and taking to large poppers thrown for GT’s. I have reported before that the bait balls close to shore this year have been awesome. Some people have been reporting that the action off Janz beach has slowed, however, one angler went down this week and caught 12 decent fish in one day from the shore including golden trevally, queenfish, spanglies and the prize fish was a cobia around 1m long!

Athol Bishop was another lucky fellow who caught a 17kg mackerel from the shore!! Yes, all from the shore. What an amazing day they had? We’ve also had reports of smaller Spanish mackerel being caught off the beaches, with some people confusing them for school mackerel. It’s a good idea to have a copy of the different species with you while fishing. You can get a hard waterproof card with pictures on it that is easy to fit in with your fishing gear that has all the main species caught here to ensure you are correct.

We had a complaint from a customer this week who went out night fishing. The night was so calm and glassy and still, that in 60m of water they had no drift. Sadly, they didn’t get many fish, but I reckon I would swap a night like that for a really rough and windy night out with some fish caught anytime! With such still nights and the whales around, it can be a ‘night to remember’ on the water with the call of the whales echoing through the calm seas while you are drifting or anchored. We experienced this once years ago and that memory is one that will stick forever.

The winners for the monthly fishing competition for July are Athol Bishop and Thomas Rintoul. Dan Schomburg came in a close second with his cracking red emperor and all entrants will be entered in to the yearly super draw of over $700 worth of Shimano gear at Christmas. Thank you to all who participated.
