Exmouth Fishing – October 2010

Baitschools along town beach of an early morning have been herded up by small queenfish and trevally. If you’re lucky enough to watch the sunrise you should see the baitschools scattering as the predatory fish chase them. Pelicans, terns and seagulls have been hanging around to pick up any parts of bait that the fish miss, so if you can see the birds gathering, then you’ll probably find the fish feeding. A very small lure similar to the size, colour and shape of the hardy heads is recommended, such as a ripping minnow or skin deep. These lures do not dive deep and should not snag up on the rubble in the shallow water.

Jodie Holmes has entered her cracking mackerel into the monthly fishing comp. Jodie was out on the west side reef fishing one day recently while also having a floating bait in case a mackerel was nearby. The weather wasn’t too flash, so they decided to come in to the gulf. In the calmer water they tried again for a reef fish and mackerel. Within no time the floating bait was struck and the reel began to scream. It was a cheap rod and reel that they thought may not hold up to the pressure. However, Jodie did manage to land the fish in just ten minutes! It weighed 11kg and measured 1.4m. The gulf has continued to show up good numbers of Spanish mackerel and at this time of year the outer islands seem to hold the big females.

Next week we will have the results of the Betta Billfish Bonanza for you. The billfish have been reported nearly every week in this report and after speaking with the journalist from a Perth newspaper, he’s told us that he has had a billfish pic from a person up here nearly every week too! The Mandurah Boat Show was attended by over 20000 people this year and Exmouth had a great display showing the new marina development and offering a holiday to Exmouth thanks to local businesses. Talks were done on the fishing stage each day on fishing in Exmouth and pamphlets were handed out for the upcoming international billfish tournament in March. There was a lot of interest from large boat owners who want to come here to catch and release fish as well as enjoy the beauty of travelling up the coast to Exmouth.

Thanks again Bluewater Tackle!
