The squid off at the Exmouth Game Fishing Club was a great success with over 20 boats entered and many people out to have fun squidding in the darkened cloudy and wet weather. The rains cleared for the afternoon though and several anglers successfully landed squid up to 1.3kg. The dirtiest angler prize for juniors went to Chelsea Smith, while the adult prize went to Leigh Mitchell. It was a casual fun day followed by some yummy hamburgers at the club in the evening and prizes thanks to the two local tackle stores.
The rains and northerlies hampered efforts for many, although while it was horrid around the west side and at the tip of the cape on some days, it was rather calm in the gulf. One angler decided to go out to Coopers Shoals and try for some mackerel. He was successful with the Spaniards, as well as some longtail tuna. Coral trout have also been prevalent in the gulf, along with various emperor. Luckily there were some options on some days for anglers to get out for a fish.
The anglers from Albany chasing the blue eye trevalla were not successful this trip and have planned to return again next year to try and capture these species that they believe are here. They were successful though with other species such as trevally on poppers and other reef species and enjoyed their time in the northwest.
Trevor Earl was the winner for the grand prize last year for the monthly competition. He has entered again this month with a whopping giant herring caught in the gulf. His wife Rose also caught a rather large cod. The couple are well settled again for the season and there’s no doubt they are having fun with the fishing.
